Recently, while strolling late at night through my vibrant city, as I often do, I wandered from K Road down Howe Street and along Hopetoun. Aucklanders (those in the know, at least) might recognise this part of a well-known block where cars once circled in a steady stream, seeking out night workers for brief encounters. These women would be picked up, taken to a quiet spot, and returned after a short while—then the cycle would repeat. The suspiciously tall women were in a street yonder, so I’m told.

Since COVID, this scene seems to have largely faded. So, I was surprised to see a woman, likely in her early sixties (still youthful), bravely continuing her work. I approached and asked, “Are you out here working?” It was a clumsy opener, as I couldn’t think of a better way to start. She shared that she’d been out for a couple of hours without any interest. I wished her well and continued on my way.

Then I began to contemplate why this is all but gone… Then I realised the price for a quick HJ or BJ hasn’t changed in 40 years. When I’m really in a rush and feeling cheap, I’ve been known to see a couple of sweet Asian ladies in Mt Albert who charge $40 and $60 for a HJ and BJ respectively (and there are other places advertised)… exactly the street price in the mid-80s, possibly earlier. Same as on the street now, I’d been duly informed. Compare that, for example, to inner-city house property prices, which have risen 50x in that period.

So are the cheapskates preferring a safe, quick thrill inside rather than run the risk of inviting a shadowy stranger into their car, or is it just not worth shivering in a windy, dark corner to scratch out a living? Whatever the case, an Auckland institution is dying and that’s a shame… I wonder if there is funding available to save its demise?

I ventured down that path a couple of times in the late 90s as a post-grad student living in Auckland for a couple of years.

For me the pickup point was Cross Street off Upper Queen St./K. Road.

One I picked up who then took me to a secluded spot nearby for a car job. Risky for me. The other I took back to nearby student accommodation in Grafton. Risky for her.

I remember circling the block a few times plucking up the courage to pull over.

The latter was memorable for a felt (or was it fur?) top hat. I can't remember much about the first pickup. Neither was "young" likely in their mid 30s. Perfectly nice people.

I suspect it has disappeared because it isn't safe any more. Prostitution was still illegal back then. Law reform gave people other options.

More than 25 years on I was reminded of these adventures during a stay for a business trip at The Abstract Hotel which is a small boutique hotel across the road from Cross St. My room looked directly out over it. No-one was working that corner. This time round it was an outcall with an inked goth girl in the hotel instead.

How is the Abstract-looks cool as shit from Outside. Similar to The Intrepid in WT? Great weekday coffee joint over the road in the Millers roaster open till 12. One of the hidden gems of Akl.

I liked The Abstract.

Small, slightly dimly lit reception matched throughout. Minimalist in the rooms with exposed aircon ducting and exposed concrete beams painted black. Definitely a goth vibe. Black and purple carpets with a bit of art deco feel.

Good for short stays on business. Soundproofing in one of the studios needed a bit of work. A couple were going at it for an hour next door at my last visit 🤪 Don't think it was a paid arrangement 😂

I also like the Airedale Boutique Suites a little further down Queen Street. Have seen at least one NZG profile with shots from there; had a couple of outcalls there. Nice rooms.

I had always wondered about K Road and tried it out somewhere around the mid 0s. Picked up a woman there, a really nice one and took her to my hotel.
She told me that it was safer for nice guys like me to go to an agency. There were too many woman on K Road who would scream "rape" in your hotel room if you didn't give them all your money.
I think the reason for the decline is the Internet and the fact you can book online.. You don't have to go driving around city streets and putting yourself at risk. The girls are probably safer that way too. They can use your cell phone number and have you traced by the cops if you do anything you shouldn't.
I don't know about you, but I'd much rather meet up with a SW in her motel or wherever than meeting some woman on the streets. Maybe it's the same for many of us? Much safer. Much more comfortable.

This is how i started punting. It was appealing, and i liked the fact I was closer to drugs, as I was punting on benders myself. Mostly had average experiences. I remember getting a bj from a old lady one time, who was sober and was telling me to take it easy haha. Nothing really worth mentioning, then I had my first punt at a parlor, and never looked back.

Definitely the internet changed it all. You could still pick up street workers in the mid-late 2000s.

In Christchurch you could still pick them up until Covid LOL. Covid pretty much killed it down there.

There are still a few street workers around the inner city, I bumped into a girl I've seen before working the streets a couple of weeks back. Generally, it's not a great sign when you see someone go from agency to street work; it's a lot riskier for the girls, and the money is not as good so it tends to be girls in a pretty bad situation, but I have met one or two that would do it as a side hustle to make a little money without having to pay for advertising or put their pictures up online anywhere.

I wouldn't do it now but I went through a street girl phase 15-20 years ago in Auckland off all the K Road side streets and Upper Cuba and Marion Streets in Wellington, all the Parlor and private girls were becoming a bit repetitive and boring so the street girls were something different and a bit of a thrill and adventure thing. I used to own a Wellington business back then and had an office/workshop on the commercial outskirts of the CBD so mostly used to take them there and fuck then in the office, warehouse, storeroom or where ever else I could think of, it was a pretty big mixture of girls, obviously some of them if not most of them were pretty down and out and dodgy people. Out of around 30-40 street workers I only struck one bad encounter with a meth junkie attempting to extort money out of me when I was driving her back from my business, she was txting her Islander mate that looked after her giving him directions trying to get him to find us and assist with the money extortion, she refused to get out of my car and kept txting him what streets we were on so I had to use a bit of sneaky trickery to fool her to get her out of the car then fucked off and left her to it in the dark.

I went into a cheap upstairs knock shop on K Road one night about 20 years ago and paid the guy at reception and he took me off to a room and told me the girl will be right in, I sat there for about 15-20 minutes before this really rough girl came in and pealed off all her winter street clothes, I did the usual deed and fucked her etc and was talking to the reception guy when I left and he said he'd run out of girls so he was up and down all the side streets trying to find someone to come into the shop for an hour 😂🤣

An interesting question from doak.
My guess is the cameras everywhere, cheap phones and net access.

I enjoyed an occasional street punt back in the day. It sure had its dark side: I recall picking up a girl from Hunters Cnr around '05, a slightly chubby island girl who was with her minder. She was pretty fresh-faced so I asked how old she was. She said she was 19, further chat she mentioned she'd been working a few years. (!)
I think I said something like 'oh fuck' in sadness and she must have mis-interpreted it, because she said to talk to her guy, he can find me some younger girls.
That was it for me, I stayed away from the south.

There were a few fun regulars around the K-Rd area. A 40's girl (Tilly?) who worked on Gundry who was always drunk and used to flash her snatch at cars "to prove she was a women" . The older women on Hopetoun with the large coat and nothing else under it.
