Were the 2010s the golden age of punting?

This isn't a review but I wanted to put it in the Wellington Reviews section because it's being written from someone whose punting experience has been almost entirely based in this region. The thought occurred to me today that people like to reminisce about eras that were supposedly better than now. While I 'm probably not the only one who thinks the first quarter of this century has been far from a terrific ride for society as a whole, it would be fair to say that the 2010s were the best years to be a punter, right? I didn't begin punting regularly until late 2008, so there could be those with longer 'careers' who may beg to differ in opinion, but I certainly think they were great times, especially in Wellington. The start of the decade saw the rise of smartphones and cheap broadband, making the fledgling NZ Girls website so much easier to discreetly look at, and it was amazing just how many options there were. The escorts were younger (we were all younger!), the prices were affordable and living costs were relatively low, despite the lingering effects of the GFC.

I often look back over my punting diary with admiration over just how many sexual conquests I had for under $200 each time. I was putting up to 50 times annually throughout the second part of the decade, and yet in 2016-18 only once each year did I pay more than $150, and on all three occasions they were $160. In 2013 I had a euphoric 45-minute double massage for $240, and even as late as 2019 I had a satisfying half-hour one with two Asians for $180. Many of the sessions I booked lasted 45 minutes or an hour, often massage but sometimes full service, usually Asian but many times non-Asian, and from young to middle-aged. Sometimes they were forgettable, but a huge number of them had me writing the initials BPE - "best punt ever" - by the names in my diary.

So what happened when the fucking 2020s arrived? Covid and the subsequent cost-of-living crunch. Many establishments closed and several independents retired, while prices went up and up. For example, when One Night Stands was based in The Terrace I remember paying $150 for an hour's full service with a lady who was keen to kiss as well. Now if you want to have a 1-hour full service at 1NS over in Newtown you have to pay $240 plus another $50 for the privilege of being kissed - almost double the price in less than 10 years. I believe this is more to do with falling supply and thus competition than rising living costs. Not only that, many escorts are still around after 15 years or more on the scene, and sadly it is true that we don't get more attractive with age. I know that the 'veterans' have kept their prices down because of this, but it's meant the new girls on the scene are charging way more starting out than the older generation used to, even taking inflation into account. And of course, there has been a growing number of negative reviews on this forum, particularly in regards to the highly frustrating 'bait-and 'switch' tactics of the touring Asian SWs who seem to be the only ones who charge less than $200 for any service that lasts more than half an hour these days.

As many others here have commented, the punting scene seems to have been dying in Wellington this decade thanks to the perfect storm of higher prices, stagnant wages and reduced options. The question is, will we ever have another golden period?

I agree that generally, there has been a fair amount of erosion in the scene. I think your thesis is pretty dead on; things didn't just seem better ten years ago, they were better and I feel the market was a little more "fun". I've thought about my own experiences and it's not just because I was ten years younger, I'm better able to afford things now than I did, but things definitely have changed and not for the better. An indication is that on given day, there are more listings in Christchurch than Wellington despite us being (depending on how you measure it) 25% greater in population with 45% greater average household income.

What I think you're noticing, and dusting off the economics lectures I went to, is the effects of price anchoring among other second order effects.

When prices rise and are accepted by the market, price anchoring sets seller and buyer expectations. The new price becomes the reference point, so both existing working girls and new entrants anchor around it. Because us punters don't always have full information (though this site certainly helps with the bad actors like B&S) the market doesn't consistently reward cheaper entrants which weakens the competitive pressure for new working girls undercut.

So a new girl will look around at what they assess are their peers and fair market value and they respond rationally to the existing price signal. If they match the price they can avoid triggering competition signals and a race to the bottom. This then leads to tacit coordination (or even explicit if girls agree behind the scenes) where girls independently arrive at the same pricing strategy simply by observing what the market appears to bear. Some punters and girls may be pushed out of the market, or move to riskier markets like Low-can-toe.

Prices in the major market then exhibit less downward pressure due to instinctive price stickiness. As a result, increased supply alone isn't enough to reliably drive prices down.

The only thing I could imagine changing this is a much larger oversupply of new entrants at heavily discounted rates (unlikely in this climate).

I hope that helps to confirm some of the feelings you've had with a useful framing.

Tl;Dr, we may be stuck like this for a while but at least we have each other.

Good points and I doubt we'll ever see a massive increase in supply ever again for the simple fact that economic austerity, especially in Welly, is the new normal. I'm wondering if the phenomenon we're seeing will create a vicious cycle. If escorts are charging more from a starting point while punters have less discretionary income, then demand will drop, meaning they get fewer clients. But if they hold their prices due to the cost of overheads, they will have to accept more asshole clients who may be willing to pay more for them to do things they're not comfortable with. That makes their work unpleasant causing them to either leave the industry or put their prices up even further so that they don't need to see as many clients and thus filter out the bad ones. Higher prices may make some punters more demanding about wanting certain services like GFE, continuing the trend of the environment being less 'fun' than it used to be. It is notable how extras have become so pervasive in advertisements now, whereas in the past it was usually up to the lady's discretion. I'm guessing they're doing this more out of necessity than simply milking what they can get out of us guys. But it does remind me of the concept of 'enshittification' - where we're paying more and getting less in return - which seems to be happening in many areas of commerce today

I would be keen to know if my theory also applies to the escorting side as well. Was it better being a sex worker in the previous decade than it is now? I figure that even though the supply was huge and prices were generally lower in real terms, escorts had more options for where they worked and may have been happy earning less if their workplaces were safe and enjoyable ones.

It's complete nonsense. I've been punting in Wellington for 20+ years and I don't think now is any better or worse, it's just different. I certainly don't see anything special about the 2010s.

On the price thing, I think that the price of punting has generally gone up much less than the rate of inflation over that period - some of my favourite providers are charging the same as 10 years ago, others have only gone up by less 10% in that time.

I'm guessing those favourite providers are the older ones who have to keep their prices down because of their age? (Indeed one of them told me that was the reason.) As for the others, I'd love to know who they are because from what I see everyone on NZ Girls who is still around after 10 years or even 5 years is definitely charging more than 10% (and stacking on the extras).

Was a change following COVID for me. Wasn’t prices (small increase) but SWers leaving meaning a few less quirky cool Welly indies. Wellingtons different and that’s what I like about it.

Taken me a while to adapt had to start using the standard advertising platforms instead of social media ones. Start using shitboxes like here & previously AF

Last couple of months I’m back to where I was. Know enough ladies that I can book as opportunities arise covering what I feel like at the time.

My SM Opinion.

No one and I mean literally no one has ever come close to an Angel Massage when she worked Intimate Touch. Those reverse body slides where her pussy brush your lips was amazing.

Back then there were at least a handful of SM providers, now not a one in Wellington.

You could get a SM 60 Mins for under $200 easily, now your looking $250-$300 from mostly escorts offering as a side service, as much as I love SM I won;t do it on principal so go get a cheap rub and tug.

I mean Paris offered it, but they fucked it up, only $20 less than FS and no touching at all. That's why it lasted only a couple of months plus no table.

Please can someone open one up in the City, It will work

The only thing I miss is the quality South American girls that used to come over here. Had some absolute bangers 7 or 8 years ago then the shit ones arrived and it's never really been the same post covid. I was chasing SA girls for a while but they've mostly been disappointments over the last few years.

Yes, I remember Angel when she worked at what is now The Apartment. Stunningly attractive and her massage skills were amazing, and to think she used to charge as little as $100 for 30 minutes.

Man, I wish time machines existed and we could re-experience all those wonderful times. And when we get to Decemeber 31st 2019 (you know, that date when the term Covid-19 was first used), wind back the clock and experience it all again.

I used to travel to Wellington for work between 2010 and 2020. The options and price have taken a hit for the worst.

I used to remember this place on Wilis St, it was called the Kensington. They had some gems and I was able to walk in and check the girls out. They had a side door that was very discreet.
I believe that due to Covid, there has been an uptake on online material like Onlyfans. Alot of girls, particular younger ones are opting for this as it sell thier material 24/7. They can live a normal life and make content when it suites them. Alot of men are probably opting to purchase thier content as well as it does sound like some girls are making more money then they would being escorts.

You can't easily arrange group sex now compared to 2010s or early 2020s... Paradise provided the best avenue for it.
