How Do You Handle Cashless Parking in Auckland?

Most parking in Auckland these days is cashless, either app-based or card payments at machines.

No cash accepted, so every payment leaves a bank transaction trail.

The hassle of finding parking, plus this cashless system, has been the reason I haven’t had the opportunity to try some amazing punts purely because parking is such a pain.

Punters, how do you manage this? Any tips for keeping these payments discreet on bank statements to avoid awkward questions? Share your tricks for staying low-key with apps or card payments.

I know the parking behind Sapphire Blue is free. Although half the time the parks are all taken. But if you're lucky you might secure a free park there.

Open a small account at a bank and get a debit card. Don’t need to put in an Ird number. Statement gets sent to a burner emai address. Use your burner phone as a contact. Just keep small amount in there for parking.

Also there is free parking down the side street of O Group. Same for SC (one of the sites). Short walk from SL but 90 min parking by Pavillion in Domain. Also Sunday free on the side street opposite the nearby park. Save your $$$ for punting.

I didn't necessarily mean you had to actually go there, just pointing out it is there and free. Half the other people parking there probably aren't even customers.

There's also Woolworths on Quay street which has free parking. Might have to walk a bit to get to your booking though. If you want to be legit and make sure they don't tow you could rush in and buy a pack of gum or bottle of water.

Is a parking transaction on a bank statement that much of a big deal, who's looking at the statements?

This would seem to be the best idea if this is a concern, given the Prezzy card option does not appear viable.

I live in New Zealand so I haven't used Auckland parking meters, but if they take contactless they would probably work with a digital Wise card. Then you would just be left with the problem of explaining why you're sending money from your bank account/credit card to Wise and (assuming your punter phone doesn't have contactless support) why you have the Wise app and an extra card in your Google/Apple wallet.

That’s why I mostly punt within walking radius from work 😅

Easy for a cheeky lunch punt, or after work (if not going straight home afterwards - can’t go home smelling a different soap scent lol)
