Is it me or is becoming harder to find cash machines these days. I dont generally carry cash on me these days but when I decide to punt - there seem to ve none around! And always nervous doing bank transfers too! When the NZ does go fully cashless - what are the WGs going to do? Anyone else have any thoughts on this??
 
Yes, it is annoying. When they installed an Allpoint ATM at one of the supermarkets I go to it was initially free. After a while, they started charging... 😡
I usually try to find a bank ATM, but they are gettting fewer.
 
But serious answer, I don't think I've encountered a bank that doesn't have an ATM attached so that's usually a safe bet for me, I can only use smart ATMs as I'm the depositer not depositee.

Those of us who pay taxes do tend to have a range of options for payment. I can send out invoices that can be paid with a debit/credit card, I know some workers who have mobile eftpos too. The main issues with that are the inherent lack of trust in the industry between providers and clients and the probably bigger concern of privacy. I can think of many reasons a gent wouldn't want a record of his bookings on his bank statements outside of the obvious girlfriend or wife situation.

There's no good answer to what to do about those things as we keep getting pushed cashless. Rage against the machine? Outside of seeing working girls, there's a whole bunch of other very good reasons we should rebel against the cashless society push. I won't go into but it includes some fun buzzwords and phrases such as "surveillance" and "government control."
 
Thanks Ivy, really appreciate your feedback on this one. Good to have a WGs perspective . The "problem" is that there are now fewer branches if banks so that decreases the amount of ATMs. And to find an ATM not attached to a branch that is near or on the way to a booking is becoming increasingly challenging!
 
The only thing I use cash for punting. As we move towards the digital age, there is a move towards reducing the number of atm machines and physical branches.

It looks like I am quite lucky as there is a local one for me in the suburb, in addition there are some in the busy areas of the cbd. As my punting habits have been picking up I have been keeping on eye out for ATM's that are close to punting locations. In Wellington there is a popular location that has one around the corner which is very convenient.

Yup, successive foreign-run regimes under Luxon and Hipkins have pressured banks to shut down ATMs and bank branches alike.

That being said, most of the enemy owned banks (i.e. what 95% of people are with), and also KiwiBank, do have fee free agreements for ATM withdrawals. So even if you're with the Cooperative Bank or a credit union, you can always keep an account with one of the ocker banks to use to pull cash out from any KiwiBank/BNZ/ASB atm.
 
Another option sometimes closer than a bank atm. Often get part of my cash from a sports bar with pokies.

Handy as also doubles as an excuse for withdrawing cash often “gambling” 🤣 If I ever need a loan bank might not like that 🤔 .
 
I feel sorry for the homeless in a near cashless society.. most ATM's churn out $20's, $50 notes which I ain't going to part with, generally have no coins on me but would give $5 ers if I had any
 
I reckon we just need to be able to have mobile EFTPOS or similar and removing those fees. I went to Brazil last year, all you need is a card, street vendor and pretty much everyone use card to pay wave without Extra charges even for AMEX. or they have an e payment call PIX which is awesome but only for local.

If you want quick cash, just go to a supermarket. Countdown will let you take out cash up to $200 a time in one transaction without the need to purchase goods from the store. I've been able to take out $300 but in two separate transaction one after the other. Otherwise, just buy a drink or gum and then ask for cash at the checkout. There are no fees incurred as far as I know.
